Ticket to Ride is a railway-themed strategy board game where players compete to earn the most points by collecting cards, placing trains and completing journeys. It is an easy to learn game that can be gently competitive and has become a popular classic.

Play involves claiming routes on the board using your trains and cards. Longer routes score more points but require more cards to claim. Your routes can be linked together to meet criteria in your journey cards and earn more points.

As play develops you battle for routes and points. Play ends when one player has used all of their trains and scores are totalled. To do well you need to complete you own objectives, whilst carefully watching and obstructing or avoiding opponents.

This results in a game that combines planning and flexibility with a quaint construction of rail routes. What starts as a simple challenge soon gives way to more layered strategies and the desire to play one more time.

Learn to Play: This takes 10 minutes to learn. However the nuances of scoring and tactical play develop over a few hours.

When first playing, this can help:
  • Limit player numbers to two, so that you have more space on the board.
  • Remove the station pieces from the game to avoid learning their rules.
  • Start by looking at the Journey cards together to locate stations.
  • Ensure that players only have one longer journey card per game.

Play Time: This game will take between half an hour and 1 hour to complete. Duration is affected by speed of player and the number of people playing.
