Play Overview
Tower Escape (2023) is a strategy survival game that turns the tower defence format on its head: rather than placing defences for the onrushing enemies, you pick the enemies and guide them to safety. You recruit a team of minions with different abilities and then set a path through the dungeon for them to (hopefully) collect powerful gems and relics that make it to the other side.
Each round you pick a set of minions from your deck of cards and then steer a literally snaking path through the dungeon to guide them through. It sounds simple, but careful assessment and planning are crucial. You can use research like the threat heatmap to plan the safest path.
As you progress your team of minions grows and can be upgraded to enhance their performance. You can also combine minions to create more formidable versions and discover new abilities. Each time you get through unscathed you earn accomplishments and skills for the next round.
The result is a game like Loop Hero, that subverts a classic formula by putting you in the role of the enemy. Finding the right path and sequence of heroes to get to the end is both perplexing and fascinating. Add to this the clever combination of abilities and you have a dungeon survival game that really stands out.
