Play involves using one stick to move and the other to aim. You select one of the outlaws you've collected at the start, each one has a signature weapon and abilities. You have to avoid enemies bullets while targeting and moving at the same time.
Each time you play a level it is created fresh. Enemies, collectables and landscape change each time. Before you start there's a chance to analyze the level to evaluate the best character to deal with enemies, obstacles and other Wild West undesirables. Will you use dynamite to cause rockfalls on unsuspecting enemies; shoot open ranch gates to cause stampedes; flip tables for cover or kick tar barrels toward bandits and set them ablaze? How you play will raise or lower your notoriety with your actions, influencing your path and difficulty across the west.
The more gang members you have the more lives you have, as once one dies the next in your posse can step up. As well as surviving you need to rescue hostages and escort them to the end of the level to add them to your group and grow your outlaw team. Loot trinkets for your characters to augment their abilities increasing speed, reload time and so on.
