Batman: Arkham is the a series of games where you play vigilante hero in an expansive recreation of Gotham. You drive, glide, and zip-line around the city stopping thugs and saving the day. Through the games you also play as other masked heroes from the Batman universe such as Batgirl, Robin, and Nightwing.
It's a faithful recreation of the DC Comics. In fact the first two games were written by veteran Batman writer Paul Dini and featured voice actors Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill reprising their roles as Batman and the Joker.
The games develop the conflict between Batman and a gallery of different rogues', although usually revolving around the Joker:
- Arkham Asylum (2009) has Joker plotting to take over the asylum and trap Batman.
- Arkham City (2011) has Batman himself imprisoned with Joker planning to use him as a test subject to cure his disease.
- Arkham Origins (2013) is a prequel and follows a less able and younger Batman, who is the target of assassination attempts.
- Arkham Knight (2015) brings things to a head with the Scarecrow forcing a citywide evacuation and uniting various enemies.
These are big brash games that deliver blockbuster impact. This means, as reflected in their ratings, that the fighting is bone crunching and combat hard hitting. But along-side these big brash beats are stories about the balance of power and justice, protecting the fine line between heroes and villains.
