How video games change players varies widely. It depends not only on the game but the player, the context they play in and other Activities they enjoy alongside the game.
To record the ways that games change players we have worked with Sabrina Culyba, author of The Transformational Framework. In that book she identifies 10 key areas of change that games bring to the player. We have recorded 152 different transformations through our Game Pathways interviews. They identify not only change for a single game but how these transformations accumulate through a series of related games in the life of a player.

Playing this game enables you to gain knowledge (facts, information and recall) about a topic. This may be as simple as new words to describe things, or as complex as how components of a machine or system work together.

You can do something new

Playing this game enables you to gain a new skill (abilities, technique and application). This may include being able to do something in the game itself, but also includes skills that transfer to to the real world like solve mathematical equations or grow potatoes.

Playing this game has an effect in your physical body (health, biometrics and performance). This may be that you have exercised regular to gain fitness, or you have developed better motor control or balance or lower resting heart rate.
