Gameplay includes pressing the square button to wield your sword. Holding the button will charge the attack, while pressing furiously will create a combination attack. You can attack barrels and boxes to obtain coins, but sometimes these can contain enemies instead.
There are locked-room puzzles, where you need to think logically to blow up walls, pull levers, and put objects onto pressure pads in order to get to a different area. There are three levels to complete which are unlocked as you play. Tutorials are incorporated into the first level. There are also handy game playing tips to be found in the notes left with the remains of earlier explorers.
The result is a cute fantasy adventure which, with the addition of the easier Fun mode, is suitable for players of all abilities.
Game contains skeletal enemies and dead bodies, but these are presented in a cartoon style. The main character can be hurt and die.
7+ year-olds usually have the required skill to enjoy this game. Simple controls make this suitable for younger children, but some of the room puzzles require lateral thinking which may require help.
Account RatingAccount required for online play that has 7 years old as minimum age. You must be 7 years old to have a PSN account, which is required to play Dreams. To set this up you need permission from a parent or guardian. Unless the parent or guardian specify not to restrict Network Features | Communication and User-Generated Content, or make an exception for Dreams they will only be able to access games and assets created by Media Molecule (rather than games made by the community).
Ancient Dangers: A Bat's Tale
This game is free to play. Does not offer in-game purchases, 'loot boxes' or 'battle/season passes'. You need to purchase Dreams to play the game on PlayStation 4 or PlayStation 5. Once you have Dreams the game itself is free via the about link.
The game has two modes, Fun or Glory, Fun has unlimited lives and no scoreboard, while Glory has 3 lives and a scoreboard.
There is a setting to change text to be more readable, but this is only available at the beginning of the game, and only affects the explorer notes.
As with most Dreams games this will save your progress within whole levels only and will not save checkpoints if you leave the game.
