Play Overview
11-11 Memories Retold (2018) is a narrative adventure about two young men caught up in the first world war. A young photographer who joins the western front in Europe to impress a woman, and a German technician who's signs up in search of his son who is missing in action. Both want to preserve their humanity and come back alive to their loved ones.
Play involves controlling these two characters as they navigate the war. You explore environments and solve some simple puzzles. As you do you discover background materials about the war as well as the inner dialogue of the young characters.
As you progress you experience the war from these two perspectives. Although a little heavy handed at times, it creates a believable account of the universal challenges and prejudices we carry. Most pointedly, as the two men are trapped together and find a bird and a pigeon. The four may have simply devoured each other, but instead they find a way to communicate and work together.
The result is an unusual way to learn about the realities of war. Its unusual painterly style and intimate voice acting (from Elijah Wood and Sebastian Koch no less) is underlined by a moving orchestral score. But it is the writing that really carries the game forward most powerfully, particularly when the two young men meet and must negotiate their different perspectives and language barriers.
