Bioshock Infinite (2013) is an adventure shooting game. Although the story is unconnected to the previous games in the series, it raises similar themes of dictatorship communities and alternative to capitalistic society. It's another nuanced and complex story with a steampunk aesthetic, but turns from the body horror of the previous games to considering the fine line between protection and imprisonment in broken relationships.

The year is 1912. You play as Booker DeWitt, a private investigator hired to find a girl called Elizabeth in the mysterious floating city of Columbia. Founded by a religious sect led by a prophet, you and Elizabeth uncover a tale of rebellion, fanaticism, time travel and multi-dimensions.

Like previous Bioshock games you can gain super powers (this time called Vigors) that alter your physical form. Special powers include electric shocks, attacking crows, and bullet shields. You also have access to more standard weaponry such as shotguns and machine guns. New to the series are the Skylines, a transportation device which acts like zip-lines for travelling at high speed around the city. Also, Elizabeth has the ability to create tears in the fabric of reality and can pull objects from other dimensions such as ammunition and automated turrets to help you defeat enemy attacks.

The games in the series are available on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC, Mac, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Switch either as original releases or in a variety of remastered packs:
  • Bioshock (2007)
  • Bioshock 2 (2010)
  • BioShock: Ultimate Rapture Edition (2012) BioShock and BioShock 2
  • Bioshock Infinite (2013)
  • BioShock Infinite: Burial at Sea (2014)
  • BioShock Infinite: The Complete Edition (2014) Main game and extra content.
  • BioShock: The Collection (2020) HD version of all games on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, Switch

Bioshock Infinite divides the fans of the franchise as it departed from the previous games location and mechanics (to some extent). For those interested in a mind bending story, who can complete the difficult final battle it has a lot to offer.

Content Rating

Rated PEGI 18 for frequent strong violence towards human characters, including vulnerable and defenceless people, strong language and gambling. Gross violence includes graphic burning of enemies, decapitation, the use of a gun which microwaves enemies, causing them to explode in a cloud of blood, or impalement on a rotating drill. There are several instances of violence towards vulnerable and defenceless people in the Burial at Sea DLCs, including an instance in which a little girl is flushed out of a functioning heating vent or another in which the same girl is restrained and has an ice pick inserted into her eye socket.Bioshock Infinite features the words ‘*!@?*’ and ‘*!@?*’.Burial at Sea features slot machines in a mall, which the player is able to use and can win.The games are set in historical dystopias, which mimic radical American politics from the 20th century. As a result, there are parts of Bioshock Infinite and its DLCs which include offensive and discriminatory language. Such references include words such as ‘gook’, ‘chink’, ‘paddy’, ‘negroes’, ‘coloured people’, ‘negress’, ‘yellow’, ‘injuns’, ‘orientals’, ‘slant’, ‘slant-eyed’ and ‘darkies’. However, within the narrative of the two dystopian societies, these references are not condoned overall. There are also occasional instances of mild swearing, with words such as ‘*!@?*’, ‘*!@?*’, ‘whore’, ‘damn’, ‘Jesus’ and ‘*!@?*’.Also in keeping with its historical context, there are parts of the Burial at Sea DLCs which encourage alcohol and tobacco use, such as an increase in health when the player drinks or overt advertisement of cigarettes. The same DLCs also allude to disturbing issues such as human trafficking and child abuse.

Rated for younger players in Australia. Rated Mature Accompanied (MA 15+) for Strong Fantasy Violence.
