Play Overview
Dépanneur Nocturne (2020) (which means Nighttime Convenience Store) is a short narrative adventure about the value of conversation and local shops. You explore a store late at night, to find a gift for your partner. What unfolds is a gentle search-and-suggest conversation where the store owner helps you find the perfect gift.
Play involves leafing through the stock (toilet rolls, cleaners, food, films) to find potential gifts. In amongst the clutter are unusual items (fur jackets, strange vegetables and so on) that you can ask the store owner about.
There is some gentle puzzle solving to find some of the items. Finding coins for the bubble gum machine for example. Many of the interactions are for ambience and fun as much as progression though - grab a coffee or change the music. As you go you uncover secrets, sample some questionable soft drinks and even venturing deep under the store to find a bathroom when you need to pee.
The result is a game that recreates the joy of puttering around a local shop. As you do you get to know the owner and the history of the place -- but as much through the objects and stock as with direct conversation. You can also opt to play the game in French or English (and switch when you like) which can be useful if you are learning one of those languages.
