Play OverviewPlay Overview

Grindstone (2019) is a colour-matching puzzle game, where you plot the right path through each grid level to attack enemies and gain treasure. The aim is to join together as many similar coloured monsters as possible in one go.

You plot a course from square to square, moving vertically, horizontally and diagonally to chain together the most matching items and trigger combos. If you finish your turn next to a monster they hit you and take life points away. You finish the level once you get to the exit at the top of the screen.

This means that you can take as long as you like at each level. But the longer you stay the more monsters appear. More chance for hacking and slashing them for points, but also more likelihood of being overwhelmed. You need to take extra care as your health doesn't restore between levels. Along the way, you can pick up useful items and gadgets.

It's a well-balanced puzzle game that tempts you to go for more loot, but also punishes you if your greed outstrips your puzzle-solving abilities.

Our examiner, Andy Robertson, first checked Grindstone 3 years ago. It was re-examined by Jo Robertson and updated 7 months ago.

Content Rating

Although originally rated PEGI 16 for Strong Violence, Grindstone was assessed by a VSC Rating Board examiner and was updated to be rated PEGI 7 for scenes of mild violence. The player’s character slashes through groups of enemies, using a sword, in order to clear a grid. The violence is unrealistic, as are reactions to it. When enemies are hit, there is a splat of pink blood and sometimes the sight of organs, although these disappear immediately and the visuals are cartoon-like.

Rated 12+ on Apple App Store for Infrequent/Mild Fantasy Violence, Profanity or Crude Humor, Alcohol, Tobacco, or Drug Use or References.

The protagonist drinks alcohol. Some of the combat slices enemies into pieces. This is depicted in a non-realistic cartoon visual style.

8+ year-olds usually have the required skill to enjoy this game. You need to be able to find the best way to connect enemies.
