Play Overview
Hive Time (2019) is a strategy game where you build a beehive and make honey. You command your bees to harvest resources, grow your hive, and produce a new Queen before the current one dies. It's unique for its buzzy subject matter, and because it opts for intrigue and discovery over simulation realism.
You assign roles and make decisions as you manage your colony. At certain points, you need to make important choices that affect the hive. Respond to wasp attacks, deal with outlaw slugs, or help a caterpillar realise a lifelong dream. Send Foragers out to find pollen and nectar, have Builders research new cell types, and ensure you have enough Beesitters to raise the next generation of bees.
Unlike other simulation games, Hive Time offers an easier experience. It approximates the life of the hive rather than perfectly replicates it. While some may miss the more nuanced realism, for younger players this works very well. It's easy to pick up, even if you haven’t ever played these types of games before. You can focus on the story of the bees rather than get bogged down in the intricacies of simulation modelling.
Hive Time is an unusual game both for its subject matter, but also as a good first management sim to play.
