In League of Legends you battle enemies and other players in online arenas. You choose a champion with unique abilities and battle to destroy another human or computer-controlled team's base. Other modes vary the challenge with specific objectives, rules, and maps.

At the start of each match, players start relatively weak but can improve by collecting items and experience while playing. Different types of player-characters lead to different strategies for play. Gaining levels in matches unlock their champion's special abilities and augment them in a number of unique ways. If a champion loses all their health, they are defeated but are automatically revived in their base after enough time passes. As you play more and more games you earn levels that unlocked additional content and abilities.

It is a very popular game with related merchandise, toys, accessories, and apparel. It has an active and widespread competitive esport scene. The 2019 League of Legends World Championship had over 100 million unique viewers and a minimum prize pool of US$2.5 million that featured a collaboration between Riot Games and Louis Vuitton.

League of Legends: Wild Rift is an upcoming version for iOS, Android, Xbox, PlayStation and Switch.

Higher kill counts result in additional achievements (e.g., “levelling up”). Battles are accompanied by slashing sounds, colourful projectiles, and red blood splashes; one vampire warrior's attacks cause larger blood-pooling effects. A variety of female characters are depicted in form-fitting outfits that expose mild cleavage; suggestive jokes can occasionally be heard in the dialogue (e.g., “Sorry boys, I keep the fuzzy cuffs at home,” “Is that a rocket in your pocket?” and “For only $2.95 a minute, I'll leave you breathless.”). One playable character drinks frequently from an oversized cask, slurring phrases such as “The only time I have a drinking problem is when I spill it”; his Drunken Rage ability can be used to reduce inflicted damage.
