Obakeidoro is a hide and seek adventure game. You play with up to four people, three are humans hiding from the other player who uses a monster to chase them down. The humans have 3 minutes to work together to get away.

Play for the hiding players involves finding places where they won't be found and crouching down to hide. Crouching turns out your light and makes you harder to find.

Play for the seeking player involves using clues from ghosts to locate and then chase down the players. Humans can use their lantern attack to fend off the Monster. The Monster player can glide through buildings and track them with ghosts. The music changes for the Monster player when they are near to Humans, which can help them locate them. When Humans are caught they are placed in a cage, but you can be set free by other players who are not yet caught.

As you progress you can unlock characters, lanterns and abilities in the monster shop. Different characters each have different stats and abilities. You also learn that you need to be careful when walking over different terrain as the noise can give you away.

The result is an asymmetrical multiplayer game where players have different roles. Like Mario Chase in Nintendo Land or Hello Neighbour, the novelty here is the different roles and how Monsters and Humans have a different view of the world to ensure the challenge is well balanced.
