Otteretto is a puzzle game where you match blocks to make palindromes. Rather than the usual match-three format, instead you have to find patterns that mirror in the middle, like a palindrome but with colours/shapes rather than letters.

Play involves using the mouse to highlight a series of blocks in the well. Your aim is to create long strings of colours that form the aforementioned palindromes. This starts simply, but soon leads to strategic selection of shorter palindromes (sometimes just a single block) to setup longer strings.

There are different modes. Classic challenges you to achieve a particular score with a limited number of blocks, to be able to move on to the next level. Daily Stack is a global competition where you try and score more points from the shared starting point that day. The puzzles are hand crafted sets of blocks that require you to find a single, massive palindrome. Containment challenges you to avoid the well filling up by finding long palindromes as more squares are added every move. Walls challenges you to find palindromes around each level's impassable walls.

The result is an unusual and elegant puzzle challenge. The daily challenge and other modes extend the play of this highly polished game that innovates what was quite a tired genre.

Skill Rating

7+ year-olds usually have the required skill to enjoy this game. The simple puzzle works well for really young players. It's also an interesting way to introduce the concept of palindromes without being bogged down with letters and spelling.

Our Otteretto Accessibility Report documents 28 accessibility features:
You can undo your previous go, but you can't rewind more than one go.

If you fail a level, the game offers some suggestions on how to do better next time. Once the level has become impossible to complete, it also suggests that you restart.

The game doesn't require much reading. The majority of text is large including menus. However, the mode description and achievements are quite small. You have a score in the game which is a small number, but is also indicated by a tall meter that is more visible.

The game outlines tiles that are selected and makes a sound. When you have a valid palindrome a different sound is made and the chain flashes and brightens. From the start you can select a set of colourblind friendly tiles with different symbols for each colour. You can also unlock other options like letters and the like.

You can play the game with just a mouse or touchpad and only require one button. This button does need to be held down.
