Play Overview
Pattern (2020) is a game about exploring different worlds. It's novel because of the lack of objective or direction. You are left to explore each world, with only the smokestack of a fire in the distance as a waypoint. When you reach the fire you can choose to rest and move to the next world.
Play involves exploring each environment at your own pace, and taking photos as you go. As you move through the world it responds to you to some extent. Plants grow, the sun rises and sets. You discover broad vistas, towering cliff-sides, and hidden structures. The music matches the spaces that you pass through. It's procedurally created to change based on your location and what surrounds you.
Once you have visited each world once, you can start again to see the thoughts of the developer embedded in the world as blue orbs. It's an unusual insight into the world of the creator in whose world you are roaming.
The result is a game about note taking, orienteering and diary making. It's up to you how you document your journey. It's a journal-like story about the process of creating art discovered through play.
