You play a character with stats that reflect combat ability, morale, and magical affinity. You need to use these skills to maximise the points you earn with the gem matching. As you progress you can earn enhancements to your abilities and face tougher enemies.

Puzzle Quest 3 returns to the series role-play puzzle challenge. It introduces a new player versus player mode and takes place 500 years after the original Puzzle Quest. You embark on a heroic journey across Etheria to discover the meaning behind the ancient Red Dragon's dying words.

Puzzle Quest 2 had the following notes on the rating: While the actual combat does not have a visual depiction, attacks include names such as "Crushing Kill," "Blood Drain," and "Finger of Death." Also, text in the storyline includes phrases such as "Our hero travels deep into a pit of corpses" and ". . . watch in horror as the 'odd looking one' turns on the other recruit, devouring her instantly." The words "damn," "hell," and "*!@?* sword" appear in the text-based dialogue. Some female characters wear revealing outfits.
Nintendo Switch has some built-in features, including a lockable zoom, that can be used on all games. The Wii has a few helpful settings, like disable rumble, but you have to use gesture controls for most games and the system menu. Windows has extensive accessibility features. Some, like colour correction, work with games. Lots of accessibility software can be used with PC games, from voice recognition to input device emulators. PlayStation 4 has a range of accessibility settings. Some are system only, some work in games (invert colours and button mapping).
