Play OverviewPlay Overview

Rain World: Downpour (2017), and Rain World are traversal and survival games where you play a half-cat, half-slug in a living breathing world. You must venture out and brave the other predatory creatures to find food before the rain comes and you have to hide.

Play involves sneaking, climbing and pouncing your way around a world that is itself evolving. You have to work to find enough food to hibernate before the rain comes. If you do this, you gain access to more of the vast number of 1600 rooms and 12 diverse regions. But when you die you lose some of this access and must build up again.

It's a difficult game. There are unexpected ambushes from opportunistic animals. There is the harsh rain from which you must hide. Even the movement is hard to control as you have to work around the physics of your slinky body and the broken world.

As you explore you discover both opportunities for food and plenty of danger. You are small and soft and must rely on stealth and wit rather than force. The ecosystem of predators and prey has goals of its own so that the food chain evolves and you never quite know what or who you'll find in the next room. There are items to help you deal with these creatures, but you still need to work with physics to defeat the other animals and avoid being eaten.

The result is a game that gets you behaving like an animal. You find yourself scurrying out to explore the local habitat and wildlife before retreating back to safety. In doing this, the game shines a light on our own animal-ness, collapsing the usual divide between us and the other creatures we share the world with.

Age RatingsAge Ratings

Content Rating

Rated PEGI 7 for mild violence towards fantasy characters. The game has two objectives, to find food and avoid the other creatures. If confronted by a creature, which can appear for example as an alligator-like or predatory bird-like character, the only option is to try and escape otherwise failure to do so will ultimately result in the death of the player’s character. As gameplay takes place at a distance no detail is seen of the moment of capture and death. The alligator-type characters are extremely tenacious and will chase the player’s character until it is captured. They have large snouts full of teeth, and if caught by one of these the player’s character will hang limply in the mouth of the character.

Users Interact: The game enables players to interact and communicate with each other, so may expose players to language usually associated with older rated games.

  • In-Game Purchases: Additional in-game purchases are offered for items that enhance the experience.

Rain World: Downpour is an expansion that adds five new characters with new abilities. It also expands the game with new harsh lands and predators. The characters are:
  • The Rivulet: Jumps higher and runs faster but has less time in between the deadly rains.
  • The Gourmand: Can craft food and tools (with the right materials) and is large, slower and less maneuverable.
  • The Artificer: Can transform rocks into grenades and spears into explosive spears, but doing this costs food.
  • The Spearmaster: Grows bony spears from their tail, but without a mouth they can't eat the easily plucked danglefruit and batflies.
  • The Saint: Can swing through the air and over hazards using its long, long tongue, but commits to its pacifist ideology by eschewing spears.

It also adds a Challenge and Safari mode. In Safari Mode you can observe the ecosystem unfold and even play as other creatures in the game to influence the world.
