Skyblock is a game played on Minecraft servers where you start on a bare island floating in the sky and must gather resources to thrive and reach other players. It's the Minecraft equivalent to being washed up on a desert island and is hugely popular. To win you need a great deal of Minecraft knowledge and technical know-how to create farms for resources and impressive bases. Its wide variety of maps and ways to play make it appealing to a large range of people, from creative builders to critical thinkers.

In most modes, you start off on a small island with only a tree and a chest of essential resources, including a bucket of lava and a bucket of water. From these humble beginnings, you can create a stone generator and start building. You need to take great care not to accidentally lose your lava or water, as you then have to restart.

Getting to grips with this unforgiving gameplay requires patience and determination. Once you've established yourself, you can use other resources to continue expanding; building farms that yield more resources, and repeating until you have built yourself an impressive base.

The sense of achievement you get from thriving in a Skyblock world offsets the difficulty of getting established and is a recipe that has remained popular throughout the years. If you want to play Skyblock, there are many servers you can play on, such as Hypixel or, or you can download a single-player map if you prefer to play offline.

Age RatingsAge Ratings

Skyblock itself is considered user-generated content and falls outside the age ratings. However, Minecraft itself is rated PEGI 7 for Violence and Fear. The game's player character can encounter pixelated spiders, skeletons and zombies in a dark environment, which they can fight. They fall down and disappear in an unrealistic manner. Characters are pixelated and blocky with non-detailed faces.

Minecraft is rated ESRB EVERYONE 10+ for Fantasy Violence. From a first-person perspective, players traverse an “open-world” environment, avoid hazards, build new structures, and craft weapons (e.g., swords, axes, bows) to occasionally defend against monsters (e.g., zombies, wolves, skeletons, spiders). Though not encouraged, players can engage in violent acts such as lighting animals on fire and harming animals with weapons. Mild explosions are occasionally heard as players use dynamite to fend off creatures and mine the environment.

Skill Rating: This game is enjoyed by 10-14 year-olds as it's a good match for their ability and maturity. A reasonable prior knowledge of Minecraft's gameplay and mechanics is required to get items and craft farms, some very complex, to obtain resources otherwise unobtainable in the game mode.
User-Generated Content: This game includes content created by other players, such as maps, outfits and items, that are not reflected in the game rating.
Users Interact: The game enables players to interact and communicate with each other, so may expose players to language usually associated with older rated games.

Depending on which server/map you play on, the challenge can vary quite significantly. For example, on some maps, it will be much easier to obtain crucial resources. The difficulty and accessibility will also vary depending on whether you are playing the Bedrock version (consoles and PC) or the Java version (PC only, often considered to be the main version due to the wider array of content and community content such as YouTube videos). The differences between these versions will likely not affect your Skyblock experience unless you plan on making lots of redstone (the Minecraft equivalent of electricity) contraptions and farms as it is significantly more fleshed out in the Java version.

There are many parts of Skyblock that require quite quick and precise reactions, for example quickly reacting to a mob attack or saving yourself from an otherwise deadly fall. If you die, there's quite a high likelihood that some or all of your items will be lost over the edge of the island, possibly resulting in you having to restart if you lose an essential item. This adds quite a lot of pressure to the game.

If you have a screen reader enabled on your platform, Minecraft will automatically enable menu UI narration when the game is launched.

The Minecraft Launcher includes audio cues to help players navigate the login and launch experience. To enable audio cues on the Minecraft Launcher, use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+B. You should hear a sparkle ringing sound to confirm that the sound is enabled.

You can toggle auto jump to make it easier to get around and you can toggle crouching to be either a click or a hold action.

Most of the text in the game is large and contrasts well in menus, but sometimes text is overlaid directly over gameplay which can make it hard to read. Most servers will have a filter in place on the chat to remove profanity.
