OverviewOverview

The Warlock of Firetop Mountain is a game based on the choose-your-own-adventure books from the 90's.

Unlike the book, here you can choose different characters each with their own backstory and moves. But also, unlike other games, you are represented not by a lifelike figure but static tabletop miniature. It sounds like a step backwards but works well to evoke that dungeons and dragons feel.

Once you've chosen your character you get a specific side quest along with the main mission. You move around the dungeon and soon realise that your characters abilities play a big part. Some can read the signs. Others can intimidate foes. While still others have combat enhancements.

When you encounter an enemy, you take turns to move your figure and choose attacks. The outcome is determined by a dice roll. You have to manage your Stamina to avoid dying and going back to the last checkpoint.

It all looks like a classic board game, as the world assembles around you as you advance. Like those games, this is also quite hard. Before you really learn the combat well, you will die quite often. Along with the story mode, you can opt for Gauntlet mode for more quick battles.

In balance it's a great way to introduce new players to role-play video games as well as revisit the world and characters of the Fighting Fantasy books.
