Play involves choosing responses to questions the characters ask and then tapping the path for them to explore in the maze. You can switch between who you help by moving from light to dark in the real world.
It's a system that was used in a Gameboy Advance game Boktai: The Sun is in Your Hand. But rather than recharging in-game energy with a real-world daylight sensor, light is used here as a choice of who to help.
As you decide how to help the characters, as well as how much time to spend with each one, the story unfolds in a unique way. At the end of each day you see how you have tipped the balance from light to dark or vice versa.
It's an unusual way to play a game, but more than a novelty the mechanic underlines the beautiful and cruel outcomes from limited means and unintended consequences. Unmaze is an immersive tale on the moral outlook and the complexity of the human soul.
