You don't have to run a specific route, but with clever writing and pace detection, it offers plot points that encourage you to keep going. Then at certain points in the run you need to go a bit faster to escape an attack.
There are now over 400 different mission-stories and the app is in its eighth season. Each one offers similar characters but a different plot.
As you run, in addition to the motivation and speed moments, you automatically pick up suppose from your route. These can then be used in the app when you've finished to build up your home base in a lite strategy aspect of the game.
