Create An Accessibility
Page For Your Video
Game
Author: Andy Robertson

We see video games as an inescapable and important part of most children's lives. This led us to the realisation that the discovery of great games for families needs to account for different requirements and impairments players may have.

We worked with the Playability Initiative, and a range of other experts, to create a section of the database that enables parents and guardians to search for games on the basis of accessibility requirements.

Games on the database now have an Accessibility Report (like this one for Boomerang X) that can highlight over 100 different aspects of each game. As you can imagine, tracking this is detailed and time-consuming work. It's really important that the data is accurate and fairly represents each game.

To help with this process we have a questionnaire that developers fill in. It asks them a series of questions that aim to guide them through the kinds of designs and features that their game may offer players.

From first contact to completion of the questionnaire and publishing of a bespoke accessibility page for a game can be done in around an hour:
  • First contact on Twitter or elsewhere.
  • Introductory chat about accessibility.
  • Questionnaire completion with assistance if required.
  • Audit checks from database accessibility experts.
  • Published accessibility page ready for linking.

The process not only results in good accessibility data for the database but also often highlights easy accessibility wins for developers and aspirations for the future:

"I just updated Severed Steel's accessibility page on the database. Huge thanks to @GeekDadGamer for setting the page up! The questionnaire inspired some ideas for Sev Steel: like an option to disable explosion screen shake." - Severed Steel Developer

“I had a wonderful #accessibility chat with Andy Robertson (@TamingGamingDB). All our confirmed settings are recorded in their accessibility page, and we've got some great ideas of a11y we could add to @Smalland.” - Merge Games Ltd

Had a fascinating chat with @GeekDadGamer about accessibility yesterday. I learnt a lot and plan to improve OCO's accessibility features." Philip Sinclair
